During the Mission Innovation 7th Ministerial in Pittsburgh on 21st-23rd September, Mission Innovation Ministers will endorse a Track and Review Framework, recognizing the importance of enhanced data, insights and learning to support countries to accelerate clean energy transitions and transparency to demonstrate progress towards the delivery of the commitments made at the launch of MI 2.0 in June 2021.  

The Framework will be implemented with partners including the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). It will ensure that existing energy innovation data is being utilised and therefore enable governments and organisations to work more effectively, avoiding duplication of data collection efforts. 

The Framework consists of two key components: 1) Members agreeing to enhance the qualitative and quantitative evidence on their clean energy innovation priorities and activities; and 2) tracking and reviewing progress towards MI Mission goals and Insights module related initiatives.  

For many years MI members have already been reporting annually on their energy research, development & demonstration (RD&D) investments as well as on any new national and collaborative clean energy innovation activities via the MI Member Survey. In addition, as of this year MI members also share information on their national innovation strategies and priorities through the National Innovation Pathways Roundup.   

In the light of the Track and Review Framework, the MI Insights module plans to develop an Energy Innovation Metrics Hub to collate and track key global indicators relevant to each Mission topic, providing a single hub to access available energy innovation data, and MI Missions plan to report annually on their activities and progress towards the delivery of their Action Plans, advised by the MI Technical Advisory Group.
